Get paid

A list of my favorite resources around negotiations, tech salaries, and getting paid what you’re worth

Haseeb Qureshi

Parts 1 and 2 of this saga has quickly become my #1 recommended resource when it comes to negotiating for a salary in tech. Advice on everything from how to determine what to ask all the way to responding to recruiters’ tricky questions. Read Part 1 and Part 2 on Haseeb’s blog.

If you liked Qureshi’s writing on negotiation from a tech perspective, you’ll most likely enjoy Chris Voss’ take as well. Formerly employed by the FBI as a hostage negotiator, his mastery of the subject is clear.

Available from your local bookstore, or online.

Online platforms

There are countless online resources to help you get a better understanding of what you’re worth based on your level of experience, skill, location in the world, etc. One of the things I would be wary of is how equity (such as stocks, options, etc.) are addressed; often I have found that they are not included, or if they are, not weighted appropriately. Below are my 3 favorite resources:

Ladies Get Paid

The real clutch part of LGP is the slack group: if you can think of anything relating to compensation or payment it’s most likely already been asked here.

H1Bdata.info

By law, all US-based companies must publish the base pay (note: not total comp) for all visa-sponsored employees. What better way to see what people are really getting paid than a whole database?

Levels.fyi

Engineering-heavy, but gives you a good idea of how IC levels across various companies stack up. Helpful when weighing competing offers against each other.

Laws & regulations

Check local laws to see what recruiters can and cannot ask you. Ex: in CA we have the Equal Pay Act which makes it illegal for recruiters to ask what your historical pay has been. This includes:

  • Base salary

  • Bonuses

  • Company equity

  • Health insurance

  • Stipends

  • Other monetary benefits

Make sure to do your research and see what protections are in place in your state. Depending on the state, you may also be able to ask for the pay band for the specific role you’re applying for!

A few other design mentors have assembled similar salary negotiation links, you can check them out here (Asia region-specific) and towards the bottom of this page here.
